First Photowalk for 2012

Last Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 the weather was +3º Celsius. It was a nice sunny day. There was no chill factor as there was no gusty wind. I went for my first Photowalk of the year. My immediate first option was to go to the lake and take pictures of the sunset. My forefinger has been very stiff during the month December. And so, I decided to take HDR photos because of the vivid colour of the clouds and the reflection of the sun on the lake.

The colour of the sky was really cool! It was vivid blue which gave life to the leafless trees and brown barren ground.

Blue Hour or Twilight Photography

Nowadays, night photography has become popular and very interesting as the design of DSLR sensors has become sophisticated. Most of these newer models can take take impressive night shots even without the aid of a tripod. Sensitivity to light has been enhanced with higher ISO settings.

Normally, you use a small aperture and a longer exposure to obtain the best result. I've limited my ISO to 200 and used manual focus only.

For the above photo, I used the following settings - ISO 200, f/20, 6-sec., lens 18~200mm @ 32mm and I used tripod.


This one was taken facing East. The one above was facing South.

These are the settings for this photo - ISO 200, f/5, 1/5 sec., lens 18~200mm @ 65mm, hand-held, manual focus.

A fisherman can be likened to a photographer. Both of them need their respective gears to be able to enjoy its benefits. They require patience and perseverance to get a good catch. Self-discipline is always a must have. And both activities can relieve a day's stress. A "prize-catch", either a big fish or a spectacular capture of a scenery, would definitely satisfy their simple heart's desire.

The little girl above is the youngest to participate. Her name is Amelia and she is just 8-years old. She was accompanied by her father to the WWPW. She had her own camera and proudly showed me her stuff.

This is my first time to attend the Scott Kelby's World Wide Photo Walk. It was raining hard when we started. But then maybe the gods above saw our enthusiasm and determination. The rain stopped after a few minutes and the group was able to proceed and take nice pictures of Port Credit. We met the PhotoWalk leader - Hope Hanson-Baker.

This was how she described it...

So, we will be taking on the fabulous “city” of Port Credit, from walking the pier to walking in some other “interesting and less explored” areas of the “downtown” of Port Credit. There are a number of interesting art installations and buildings tucked away that we will photograph and capture.

An avid photographer, wine drinking and explorer, this walk to re-introduce everyone to the joys of capturing images for the fun of it!

I took this one when I was about to drive out from the parking lot.
I knelt to get a very low angle shot.

Inglis Falls is one of three waterfalls that surround the city of Owen Sound, Ontario and is situated south of Owen Sound on Highway 6/10, in the Inglis Falls Conservation Area. It is approximately 55 ft. high and the water comes from the Sydenham River. Access to this place is very easy and there is a paid parking lot nearby.

Tobermory is a small, quiet town located at the northern tip of Bruce Peninsula. It is one place where the sunset is an awesome sight to wait and watch. The community is known as the "fresh water scuba diving capital of the world", because of the numerous shipwrecks that lie in the surrounding waters. Nearby sites to visit are the Flower Pot island and the Grotto.

The Northern Cardinal or Redbird or Common Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is a North American bird in the genus Cardinalis. It can be found in southern Canada, through the eastern United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico. It can also be found on the Big Island of Hawaii and on Oahu. It is found in woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and swamps.

The Northern Cardinal is a mid-sized songbird with a body length of 21 centimeters. It has a distinctive crest on the head and a mask on the face which is black in the male and gray in the female. The male is a vibrant red, while the female is a dull red-brown shade. The Northern Cardinal is mainly granivorous, but also feeds on insects and fruit. Chickadee (Paridae) is a family of birds comprising 53 species of true tits (titmice). Bushtits, formerly included in the Paridae, are now classified as family Aegithalidae. Six species of chickadee breed in Canada. Black-capped and boreal chickadees (Parus atricapillus and P. hudsonicus) are widely distributed in Canada. Nobody pays close attention to this plant. I didn't even notice it when I was taking pictures. More so, I don't know its name. From the looks of it, it's some sort of a wild specie. But then if you scrutinize and look at it, you will see a life's lesson...something to emulate from. Look at the individual parts so fragile and yet trying its best to cling to the mother stem. 'Tis the Season to be Jolly

Two families in Pickering, Ontario light up their front yard and house with colorful, glittering lights during the Christmas season. There is some sort of friendly competition between them. Only a house separates the two houses. People who go and view the colorful nightly display are encouraged to bring canned goods, pasta, noodles, etc... as donations to the food bank.

A Bridge Not Too Far

In life, many do not realize that we cross bridges a lot of times. Bridges may represent the trials and temptations we sometimes face. It may also be a symbol of "big" decisions we make - to cross or not cross. Getting to the other side is a way out from our troubles and worries. Bridges may connect us to our past and future - which brings to mind the lyrics of the popular song...

Rock of Ages

One Saturday afternoon in October, and nothing to do... went to a park and saw this rock formation. Must have been playfully arranged by kids who enjoyed balancing them on top of each other. In life, we must accept nature's hierarchy - that there are those who are above and below us. To those who are below, we must try to uplift them...and to those above, we must try to emulate.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Early morning shot from the 7th floor, just as the sun was coming out. However, do not be deceived. The temperature is -12° C but feels like -22° C. That's Toronto...looks can be deceiving.

GPS Can Be Unreliable At Times

One Friday night on our way to New Jersey, we left Toronto at around 10:00 in the evening thinking that the weather would be fine ahead. It was not snowing when we left our place. Right after we crossed the U.S. border it started to snow and visibility was getting shorter. I could not see the white lines that divided the road and more so, could not determine where the edge limit of the pavement was.

I had to drive very slowly like a turtle and always stayed in the middle of the road. Lucky enough, there were not many cars coming from the opposite direction. As we continued to drive, I found out that our GPS was leading us to an unknown and strange place. It was taking us through small roads and away from our intended destination. I soon discovered that my GPS was not working. So much energy was spent and efforts to keep us on track without success. Good for us, we found a hotel to take refuge at 2 in the morning.

Almost zero visibility
